  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onions into bite-sized petals or wedges.
  2. In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. In another bowl, pour in buttermilk. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  3. Dip each onion piece into the flour mixture, then buttermilk, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry coated onion petals in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 2–3 minutes). Drain on paper towels.
  6. Mix all dipping sauce ingredients together until well combined.
