- 2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Peel and slice the onions into bite-sized petals or wedges.
- In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. In another bowl, pour in buttermilk. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
- Dip each onion piece into the flour mixture, then buttermilk, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry coated onion petals in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 2–3 minutes). Drain on paper towels.
- Mix all dipping sauce ingredients together until well combined.
